comparison essay

The two images are both aimed at persuading the viewer to do something.
The first image is advertising the "Uncle Sam Range" cooker, whereas the second one is attempting to gain recruits for the british armed forces.
The cooker image is clearly based on white american supremacy, the names of places where slaves and immigrants were high in ratio were written on people sat at the table but pushed to the back of the picture. There is also a black slave serving the food, as at the time this was the norm in america.
The whole image is made to represent Americas independence day. this is shown by the dates 1776 and 18876 engraved on the clock on the mantelpiece. The main character in the image is "uncle sam". He looks as though he has been modeled from Lincoln, therefore representing the American Dream, Becoming Americas father figure. The fact that he is in the centre of the advertisement means that he is the most important character, even more so than the actual cooker which is pushed to the side of the image.
the colours used represent American greatness which makes people have a positive attitude towards the product.

In contrast the second image by Savile Lumley, is blatantly an English WW2 recruiting poster.
Just like the first image, Savile Lumley has used symbols of the country in the image. The queens soldiers on the floor as the boys toys, the red roses on the curtains and the royal symbol on the seat are incorporating a real English feel.
The idea of the father and the kids playing in the living room suggests that once you have returned from serving your time you will come back and have a comfy life, and not feel guilty for not going and earning a better life. I think both images are aimed at similar social classes. The second image is aimed at the middle class because the higher classes were less likely to participate in the war. Similary, the first image is aimed at lower middle classes because they are more likely to beileve they have achieved the American greatness lifestyle by buying the cooker.
